Modern approaches to HRQoL measurement: Are we moving forward

Summary:

There is a growing consensus that patient-reported outcomes (PROs), such as health-related quality of life (HRQoL), are essential for comprehensive patient-reported outcome measurements (PROMs) in healthcare. 

However, the lack of systematic application of modern measurement methods has resulted in many contemporary HRQoL measures being limited and only moderately informative. In many cases, more advanced measurement models are required to ensure valid and precise assessment of HRQoL. 

This presentation aims to provide an overview of key issues in HRQoL measurement, with a particular focus on so-called preference-based outcome measures and their role in policy-making and cost-effectiveness analysis.

Speaker:

Paul Krabbe: Expert in health-outcome measurement, particularly health-related quality of life. Until August 2024, he was an associate professor at the University Medical Center Groningen, leading the Patient-Centered Health Technology Assessment unit. 

He has contributed to clinical studies, Dutch pharmacoeconomic guidelines, and research on health-state valuation. For over 30 years he has been a member of the EuroQol Group, he has co-edited the Journal of Quality of Life Research and published over 150 peer-reviewed articles. His book, The Measurement of Health and Health Status, offers a comprehensive framework for health measurement. Now he is working mainly for his spin-off company Château Santé.
